16 - Something Purple

"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." ~ Alice Walker

Purple is the color of good judgment. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind. Purple is a good color to use in meditation.
Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery, as well as royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color. Most children love the color purple. Purple is the color most favored by artists.

This black eye is actually purple, but hard to see among the freckles!  Photograph by Deb Fewell of Cowford Traders in Jacksonville, Florida.

Had our last day of school get together at Latitude 30.  Couldn't resist taking a picture of the purple bowling ball!  All the other moms were probably thinking I'm insane or something!  Photograph by Laney Griffin Robinson

Another "Purple" shot at Latitude 30.  Still looked like a crazy lady cuz I had to stand by the bubbles for a long time waiting for them to turn purple!  Photograph by Laney Griffin Robinson

When I was in my youth, we never had pretty colored bowling balls!  I randomly took this photo of a stack of beautiful colored bowling balls at my niece's birthday party.   It wasn't till I cropped the purple ball that I noticed what was engraved... MOM!  Photograph by Grace Dorado-Foster

Friday night at the gym was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  It was a great 2 hour dance-a-thon.  I won this really cool metal water jug....the only prize that was purple!  Photograph by Grace Dorado-Foster

This was taken in Capri, Italy--I thought it was beautiful how these flowers just cascaded down the side of this building.  In going back and looking at the hundreds of pictures I took while my mom and I were in Italy, it's weird, but you never see ANY clouds!  The sky was blue like this all the time!  Photograph by Laney Griffin Robinson

This is in honor of you, Robin!  This was taken in the Detroit Airport!  I thought it was the coolest thing EVER!  Photograph by Laney Griffin Robinson

PURPLE?!  I don't mind the color purple, I'm just more of a pink girl.  I was sure I didn't have anything in my house that was purple.  Guess I was wrong!  Photograph by Laney Griffin Robinson

15 - Memorable

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” ~ Karl Lagerfeld  (To learn more about Karl Lagerfeld, please click on his name.  He is a fashion designer most notably a head designer and creative director for Chanel).

This week's theme is a twist on the word "memorial" because of the holiday weekend coming up.  Everyone was invited to share a photo or two of something that is "memorable".  The quote above says it all...  Happy Memorial Day to all!  Enjoy!

1970 - Beaches Aquatics Club - Mary Kay Clemens Mathis, Robin Anderson, Cathy Clay, Becky Morton Cooper.  Danny Clay and Renee Anderson on the left side of the photograph.  Our 8 & Under relay team was unbeatable back then.  Forty years ago, it was hard to find 4 little girls who could all swim the length of the pool!!!  Photograph courtesy of Robin Anderson

1979 - Elsie Anderson, Penny Roseborough, and Yvonne Martin.  I have no idea where Mrs. Martin is today.  I sure miss all three of these ladies!  Photograph courtesy of Robin Anderson

2002 - My sister is going to kill me!  I call this "Man Hands".  These are the little things that all portrait photographers hope to avoid.  In reality, the hand on her husband's knee is not hers!  The one on his should is hers.  Photograph courtesy of Robin Anderson

1960ish - My Dad on the bulkhead in front of our house on the ocean in Atlantic Beach.  Photograph courtesy of Robin Anderson

This is one of my all time favorite pictures.  It's my dad, my two boys (in white) and my newphew, who's 4 days older than my oldest son.  My nephew and my oldest son just turned 19, where does the time go?  Photograph courtesy of Laney Griffin Robinson

The Blue Angels during the Jacksonville air show.  This is a memorable experience for anyone who has had the privilege of seeing them perform.  I took this photo from the boat on the St. Johns River.  This was a very memorable time for me and my wife, as it was the last time her father, who was a pilot, ever enjoyed the boat or the overhead performance.  God Bless, Byron Fox.  Photograph by Steve Alvarez

The young man in this picture has just scored a golden goal to win the district championship against his biggest rival.  This is truly a memorable moment for him.  Few of us ever have a chance to experience this type of thrill!!! This was a difficult feat, as he had been sick all day and the coach had told him to play as much as he could.  He substituted himself, never playing more than about 10 min. at a time. The difficulty this presented me as the photographer was to KEEP SHOOTING, and not get caught up in the moment.  Photograph by Steve Alvarez

Look at that hair!  Only time I ever got a perm!  My girlfriend talked me into it. In front of the Casa Marina Hotel, my sister Carla's wedding. Mid 1980s.  Photograph courtesy of Gary Crumley

The Jax Beach Boardwalk.  The old bathhouse still stands. Now an office bldg.  I worked at the boardwalk under the roller rink running the Playland arcade 1974.  Photograph courtesy of Gary Crumley

It was springtime; April of 1963. My sister; Carla turning three, and my brother Kevin (18 months old) helping himself to the cake as I turn five; in a little place called Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. We had just moved from where we were born in Toledo, Ohio.
There were three days between Carla and myself; so Mom would have two cakes and one birthday party. She's holding my brother up from behind in a little carport where we kept the picnic table.
Photograph by my father, Dick Crumley.

Me holding my sister Carla's son Austin at about 18 months. The resemblance to Kevin in the previous photo is striking.  I still have that old Bugle Boy shirt too. Maybe 1992.  Photograph courtesy of Gary Crumley

1983 - This is the end of an amazing experience.  I was as thick as thieves with these four guys in Boot Camp, and I have never seen any of them again.  Photograph courtesy of Dan MacKillop

In 1976 my older sister died suddenly of a rare cerebral aneurysm before her 14th birthday.  It was devastating to my family, and traumatic to me and my younger sister.  She is always loved and never forgotten.  Even more touching is that her birthday is always around Memorial Day!  RIP Judy.  Photograph courtesy of Grace Dorado-Foster

14 - What is Your Passion?

"The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire" ~ Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch

This week's theme was designed to inspire people to share their passion with the world.  While it may seem easy for some, others struggle to find their passion.  There are people who have many passions, and others may be so entrenched in their day-to-day life that they have forgotten what excites them.  Then there are obstacles... how do you photograph your passion?  Maybe you love to read, or study the bible, or (like in my case) bring people together.

So, enjoy the photographs that were sent in this week...

In 1978, Major Lanquist at The Bolles School taught 10th grade Biology.  During our study of plants he taught us how to create Bonsai in a special lab project.  I have been passionate about them ever since!   Photograph by Robin Anderson

I love dogs!!!  Despite the fact that I am allergic to them... and the fact that my father is a Pulmonary Specialist - I have three, (two are photographed here).  I tell my dad, "they may be bad for my lungs, but they are good for my heart".  What can he say to that?  Photograph by Robin Anderson

When I have extra time I love walking on the beach and looking for shark's teeth.  This clears my mind and soul.  Can you find the shark's tooth?  I've given a lot of sharks' teeth away to friends and visitors, even strangers on the beach...but here is my small cigar box that I started when I got married in 1993.  Photograph by Grace Dorado-Foster

Being the first generation born in the USA, I grew up without close cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents.  Then about 1978 my family started to migrate from the Philippines to Jacksonville...and mulitply.  I'm not going to count the people in this photo, but I can tell you there are at least 20+ that are missing from this 2011 Christmas reunion with many many more in the Philippines.. I enjoy spending time with my family.  Photograph by Grace Dorado-Foster

I love my dog, Keiichi (KAY-chee), our 2.5 year old shih tzu.

Before I became an optometrist, I had worn glasses since 5th grade and had annual eye exams.  This is for those of you who have always wanted to know what the other side of a phoropter looks like.  Every lens, every dot, every line, every nob on top of nobs and every number means something to us.  Photograph by Grace Dorado-Foster
